The Melanesian Super Cup, another series of the Melanesian sport event in football set to kick off in Port Vila Municipal stadium tomorrow 3rd October 2015.
The tournament will feature two Solomon Islands club and two top contenders in the Vanuatu’s top league Amicale FC and Erakor FC in the Port Vila Football Association.
Tomorrow the two PVFA top flight teams, Erakor Golden Star and Amicale will kick off the tournament inside the Port Vila Municipal Stadium at 3pm.
The current champions Solomon Warriors will arrive later tomorrow, and Western United will arrive on Tuesday before their first match against Amicale in day 3 on Wednesday at 3pm.
The Warriors have also organised to visit Vila Central Hospital on Monday as a gesture of good faith to the community before they meet Golden Star in day 2 of the tournament on Tuesday and also the Westerners have also planned to visit the Vanuatu Society for Disable People after the tournament.
Both away teams, Warriors and Western United will clash in day 4 of the tournament on Thursday 8th, and Saturday 10th October, all four teams will meet again for their remaining matches at 1pm and 3pm to determine the winner.
The Melanesia Super Cup is an association football championship played between the Melanesian football clubs and the first edition of the cup was held in 2014 on a round-robin format involving every team playing each other once at the tournaments location.
It was first organised by former Solomon Islands international, David Firisua with his believe that bringing back the cup will fill a need for more competition at an elite level.
Similar Melanesian football tournament are the oldest event uniting the Melanesian people like the Melanesian Cup which was an association football championship played between the Melanesian countries and used along with the Polynesia Cup for qualification to the Oceania Nations Cup but lasted till 2000.
In 2008, the Wantok Cup was established as a competition between Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and was described by the Oceania Football Confederation as “a tournament reminiscent of the now defunct Melanesian Cup”.
The Melanesian Super Cup evolves top flight club competition between Melanesian countries, and tomorrow it is expected that government representatives and leaders of the Melanesian Spearhead Group will be present for the opening ceremony.
